Setting Sail
Abby Sunderland, 16, gets a hug from a friend on January 23, the day she first set off in her 40-foot sailboat Wild Eyes in an attempt to become the youngest person to sail solo around the world.

Journey
Technical problems forced the young sailor to stop once in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico and Cape Town, South Africa.

En Route Again
After leaving South Africa, above, Sunderland began to sail in the direction of Australia.

At Sea
While sailing in heavy seas in the Southern Indian Ocean, she lost contact with her family.

On Board
The teenager's family lost contact with Sunderland (seen here inside the cabin of the Wild Eyes,) for some 20 hours.

Good News
On June 11, a search plane sent from Australia spotted Sunderland's boat and made contact with her.
