Graham: Reconciliation Would Be "Catastrophic"

Using the reconciliation process to pass health care would be "catastrophic," Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) warned on Sunday.

"It is taking a partisan product and making it law," Graham said on CBS's "Face The Nation." "It will be catastrophic."

Graham said all past reconciliation votes had received some bipartisan support. And if Democrats passed a bill without Republican votes, he said, it would essentially end progress on all other legislation this year.

"The minority in the Senate, if this happens, is forever changed," he said.

Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) asked Republican lawmakers to continue work on other issues, even if Democrats use the procedural maneuver.

"Don't stop all other progress for the country," said Bayh, who warned blocking work on other issues like financial reform and energy would "run the risk of playing into this party of no narrative."
