Here's yet another dividing line between Republicans and Democrats: the team they want to win the country's showcase sporting event.
A new Public Policy Polling survey finds a Super Bowl Sunday split between Republicans and Democrats, with Democrats rooting for the New Orleans Saints by a 15-point margin (36 percent to 21 percent) and Republicans narrowly in favor of the Indianapolis Colts.
Independents break towards the Saints as well, 33 percent to 20 percent.
"There may not be the same kind of partisan gap on the Super Bowl that there is for Barack Obama's approval ratings, but when it comes to football there are two Americas," said Dean Debnam of Public Policy Polling. "You're much more likely to be rooting for the Saints this weekend if you're a Democrat."
A plurality of 46 percent doesn't care who wins Sunday. When all voters are included, the Saints have more supporters by a 10 point margin, 32 percent to 22 percent.
Debnam said there is less division along racial lines, with whites, blacks and Hispanics all favoring New Orleans, although African-Americans lend the strongest support to the Saints by a 38 percent to 23 percent margin.
The automated poll, which has a margin of error of 4.1 percent, surveyed 584 registered voters from Jan. 29 to 31.
For the record, the Colts, who won the Super Bowl three years ago, are five point favorites.
