"We Read It" reader: Katie Connolly
When Jenny Sanford gave up a lucrative Wall Street career to be with her new husband in South Carolina, she imagined a life filled with family, faith, and the stunning landscapes of the American South. She never dreamed she'd end up the wife of a rising Republican star. And she certainly didn't predict being publicly humiliated when her husband of almost 20 years revealed to the world his infidelity with an Argentine woman, whom he gauchely declared his "soulmate." Staying True is a portrait of a difficult and ultimately failed marriage. It's also a deeply unflattering examination of Mark Sanford: cheapskate, philanderer, and downright weirdo.
What's the Big Deal
Jenny Sanford was introduced to the nation as the woman who refused to appear at her husband's graceless press conference about his Appalachian Trail adventure. She rejected the cliché of scandalized political wife who stands by her man and became a hero to wronged women everywhere. In a culture so fascinated by infidelity, hearing Jenny's tale firsthand promises tantalizing insights into our lingering questions: Why would Gov. Mark Sanford cheat on someone so admirably composed and committed? Could her story provide warning signs for other marriages? Sadly, Jenny doesn't offer clear answers. But she does, at times unintentionally, provide insight into what drives powerful politicians to behave so destructively. (Hint: attention, adoration, desire for infallibility, and fear of aging.)
