The Alleged Gunman
Identified as Major Nidal Malik Hasan, he allegedly opened fire Thursday, Nov. 5, at a military processing center at Fort Hood, Texas, killing 13 and wounding 30 others.

Alone with His Thoughts
Sergeant First Class Noe Figueroa waits to get back on base outside Fort Hood's Clear Creek gate. "I think it's sad for all the soldiers that got hurt, that got killed. It shouldn't have happened," he said.

Victims
The gunfire broke out at around 1:30 p.m. at the Soldier Readiness Center, where soldiers who were about to be deployed or were returning to undergo medical screening were located. Nearby, some soldiers were heading into a graduation ceremony for troops and families who had recently earned degrees.

Fearing the Worst
Jamie Casteel and her husband Scotty, of Duncan, Okla., stand outside the emergency room at Scott & White hospital in Temple, Texas, waiting to hear news of their son-in-law, U.S. Army soldier Matthew Cooke, who was injured Thursday in the shooting.

Taking Action
A SWAT team enters the main gate at Fort Hood in response to what appears to have been the worst mass shooting at a U.S. military base. It isn't clear what motivated the alleged shooter, but reports said the U.S.-born Muslim psychiatrist was unhappy about being sent to either Iraq or Afghanistan.

Waiting In Line
Supplies are wheeled into the blood-donation area at Scott & White Hospital, to be given to the hundreds of volunteers waiting their turn to donate blood. Hospital officials made pleas to the surrounding community for blood donations.

Horrific Outburst of Violence
Specialist Chad Rings, left, and Specialist David Straub wait to enter Fort Hood near the main entrance to the base. President Barack Obama described the shootings as "a horrific outburst of violence," adding, "It is difficult enough when we lose these brave men and women abroad, but it is horrifying that they should come under fire at an army base on U.S. soil."

Looking for Answers
Members of the media wait for a news conference from Fort Hood officials. In Washington, the President said, "We will make sure that we get answers to every single question about this horrible incident."
